Government Publishes Amendments to Employment Rights Bill

The Government has released an updated Amendment Paper detailing proposed changes to the Employment Rights Bill, which is currently progressing through Parliament.

Following consultations with business groups, trade unions, and the public, several key amendments have been introduced, including:

  • Extending protections for zero-hours workers to agency staff, ensuring they receive contracts reflecting their regular working hours and closing potential loopholes.
  • Increasing the maximum compensation for employers failing to meet collective redundancy consultation requirements from 90 days' pay to 180 days' pay.
  • Revising Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) to be either 80% of a worker’s average weekly earnings or the current SSP rate—whichever is lower—while removing the Lower Earnings Limit.

These amendments aim to strengthen worker protections and address employment concerns.
